Lorenz “Larry” Fred Meyer, 87, of Harkers Island passed away peacefully on May 30, 2026, in his home.
Born on May 28, 1939, in Brooklyn, New York to Anna and Fred Meyer, Larry spent his childhood moving from city to city following his parents’ careers in the food service industry. In his teens, his family settled down in East Islip, NY. He attended East Islip High School, where he met his beloved wife, Sharon. The two wed in 1958 and welcomed four children: Lori, Terri, Susan, and Larry.
Larry and his family relocated to Harkers Island, NC in 1974, where he began working as a diesel mechanic supporting the local fishing industry. In 1993, Larry started Basic Power Industries, partnering with marine engine parts manufacturers to sell parts online across the country. Larry was known for his keen business acumen and his ability to “make a deal” - always buying and selling. He continued to own and operate the business, taking part in day-to-day activities, throughout the rest of his life.
He found joy in summer days at Cape Lookout with his family, fall fishing, and, in his later years, riding to town with his best friend, his dog Pugsie. He always made sure to attend his grandchildren’s events, snapping photos to capture the memory. When he did have free time, he was always looking for his new boat project.
Larry is survived by his four children, Lori Davis (Bertram), Terri Meyer, Susan Castro (Jay), Lorenz “Larry” Meyer (Robin); grandchildren, Jillian Bass (Preston), Cecily Glancy (Matt), Lauren Chadwick, Justin Castro (Jade), Brittany Castro, Samantha Rowland (Nathan), Frederica Meyer, Andrew Conway; great-grandchildren, Ethan Mitchell, Piper Rose, Walter Glancy, Nathanael Castro, Nina Glancy. He was preceded in death by his parents, Anna and Fred Meyer, his beloved wife, Sharon and his best companion, his dog, Pugsie.
A memorial service will be held on June 9th, 2026, at 3:00PM located at Core Sound Waterfowl Museum, Harkers Island, NC.
