Melissa Dawn Dempsey (Cowart)

Melissa “Missy” Dawn Cowart Dempsey, beloved wife, mother, daughter, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully on July 25, 2026 at the age of 55, at Onslow Memorial Hospital, Jacksonville, NC surrounded by her loved ones. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.

Born on August 16, 1970 in Jackson, MS, Melissa lived a life defined by warmth, dedication, and unwavering love for her family and friends. She grew up in Guntersville, AL. She worked at Kappler for many years as well as other various jobs. Melissa went on to get her GED and attended college online.

Melissa was a person of remarkable strength, kindness, and humor. Melissa had a creative spirit that shined through her love for animals, helping others, and spending time with family and friends. Above all, her greatest joy was her family, with whom she shared countless cherished memories.

She is survived by her spouse, Rodney Shope; her parents James and Mary Lynn Cowart; her children, Michelle Parmer (John) and Anthony Blake Dempsey; her siblings, Lori Cowart and J.R. Cowart; her grandchildren Hannah Hamman, Eva Anaya, Lylah & Jayden Dempsey; many aunts, uncles & cousins; and a community of friends who loved her dearly.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents Jim & Freida Lewis and Roland & Eunice Cowart.

Service Details

Visitation: Sunday, August 30, 2026 from 3:00pm to 4:00pm at Corbinville Methodist Church in Albertville, AL.

Memorial Service: Sunday, August 30, 2026 at 4:00 at Corbinville Methodist Church with Brother Larry Walls officiating.

The family has chosen cremation and there will be no burial.
