Cape Carteret artist, Richard Paul von Hoorn, 93, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family on October 24.
Born in Bridgeport, CT on September 24, 1931, Dick attended Wilbraham Academy and served in the United States Army Artillery in Korea. He was honorably discharged in 1954. He graduated from West Virginia Weslyan College majoring in art. Dick taught art at Torrington High School in Torrington, CT for 24 years. As a member of Artwell in Torrington, CT and as a resident artist at the Arts Council of Carteret County/Carolina Artist Gallery, he won many awards for his paintings, collages and assemblages. Beyond his passion for creating art from the environment, Dick loved fishing, boats, reading Smithsonian, National Geographic, Time, and the Tideland News. He also loved being outdoors. His gentle presence graced any room.
Dick leaves his devoted wife, Ann von Hoorn and his children, John Nash and his wife, Alice, of Cedar Point, NC, James von Hoorn and his wife Bonnie of Torrington, CT, Elizabeth Stevers and her husband Jeff of Vernon, CT and his son-in-law, Dan Pelino of Avon, CT.
He is predeceased by his daughter, Paula Pellino of Avon, CT.
A celebration of life service will be held at Swansboro United Methodist Church on November 11 at 2:00. Visitation will be held one hour before the service.
An ebbing tide slides into the sea,
Leaving shiny tears upon the sand.
